Week 9 - Revision

Revision

It was the best of times it was the best of times

WWW
More reflection showing what progress has been made through the group. This showed an overall growth with all the teachers and personally I feel a positive change in my practice.
I am looking forward to moving forward using the things I have learnt.

Ubiquitous

Anytime
Anywhere

Any pace

Children have access to their work wherever they are.

Results using devices in breaks

Opportunities

We saw a range of opportunities for teachers to extend and share their skills in a range of contexts.

Exam

This was the stress. 3 hours showing what I have learnt over the last term. It began with multi choice. Marked by a computer, no wriggle room. 80% to pass.
It was a huge relief to get the fireworks and a 'you passed' notification. Happily the whole cohort succeeded showing the wonderful support that the term and Mark have provided.

8: Devices

Devices

Week 8...

The Rise of the Gerhard

The journey is nearing end and things are ticking well in class according to WWW (don't believe everything you read - I'm sure mistakes are made).
I feel the classroom use of sites has been a game changing tool and DFI has helped me polish this. Children have access to their learning at the touch of a button anywhere they can get internet. My enviable task is continuing to engage them with the tasks I set. (easier for some than others)
There is a general feeling of dread eking from the icy hall as Google exam looms on the horizon.

Pedagogy and Kaupapa

Cybersmart

Proactive - cybersmart not cybersafety
Ambulance at the top of the cliff

PB4L - are you being… not You’re being (way to address children who may be on the wrong thing - remember RSP RT)

Learners are online - at home or at school - explicit teaching through school -
LCS - cybersmart - implemented at school - need to reiterate importance and ways

KAWA of Care

What they create and share is part of their digital footprint - citizens who contribute positively

Any time, anywhere, any pace

Take care - RAMs - when we go on trips - Cybersmart is access to a tool that can leave the classroom?!>

Wheoritia te atawhai

Whenever we share it’s personal - what should we share

Kawa of care

1. Responsible use agreement:

Student agreement:
  • I will respect the terms of the Kawa of Care
  • I will respect the equipment (my device, power charger and bag/sleeve) by always looking after it and keeping it safe.
  • I will respect others by always using this device to interact with others in a kind, positive and helpful way.
  • I will make the most of this opportunity to learn lots of new things and to share these with others.
  • I will always be in the right place, at the right time when I am online. If in doubt I will ask my teacher or parent.
  • I will protect my password and keep it completely secret.
  • When I take my device home, I will keep it safe when I am not using it.
  • I am responsible for any activity undertaken on this chromebook.
  • When I take my device home, I will bring it back to school everyday, charged, in good condition  and ready to use.

What does my digital footprint say about me?

Hapara

This tool was covered in depth... unfortunately I was excited to look around my children's work so missed a bit. looking forward to going through the slides.
I did pick up a few tips and made some groups - easy access of grouped children
Reset passwords - I have used this but good reminder

Part 1: Chromebooks

Why
Partnership
  • Ako involves all
  • Community engage - Kawa - created with whanau
  • Device ownership
Participation

Protection - Treaty
  • Legally set
  • Behind the scenes
  • Levels of visibility

Equity - best device for all students

When devices are taken care of - good lifespan

Funds - can find

Comfortable with device - device isn´t big deal

We had a play through a set of tasks

This showed the chromebooks to be good but a little cumbersome with keyboards and mouse - makes me appreciate the one I've got.

Ipads

This again made me appreciate the one I've got. Few bugs but can see the value - particular the rewindable element of Explain Everything.

We set up for our exam and the small examples filled me with a little fear, we will see a week of review, review, review.

Screencastify

This is a great tool for the children to share learning.
I used it to create a short video to review our Kawa of Care - this is a good way for the children to rewind their learning. I can see this working well in the class and as it is easy to create and post.

7: Computational Thinking

Computational Thinking

The excitement was building as we were set to focus on computational thinking.

WWW

The crew all seems to be putting their learning out to the world to the benefit of their students. The Belfast crew showing a wonderful level of time management providing us with resources and inspiration. (always with a smile)

The work ons were short on supply and we were able to support as a group showing that spike in confidence.

While we were going Vivian was setting up at the back of the hall with tape providing an eager group of educators.

Empowered

Dorothy checked in to show us how the insertion of Manaiakalani had positively effected her community. It was interesting and relatable to some of the issues in our community. The use of empowered students rather than student agency rang true with me and I will be using this language with my parents. I am looking forward to taking some time to watch a recommended video taken from a recent TV show. Colleagues at school had mentioned it and I was disappointed to miss it.

Check it out while it is still on demand:

Trailblazers

We started by using a diagram and following an algorithm to find out who was the taller and who lives further away.

This had some practical uses at school and I look forward to using it.
This section of learning filled me with worry and awe about what is happening in the world. We met Sophia - AI robot with up to 80% of her functions not programmed but learnt.

One hour of code was a great tool and introduction for the children - I can see it working with following instructions - reading.
We then used scratch - very practical at school and easy to set up for beginning. I didn't personally like it but could see how children would enjoy and how it could be used educationally.

Here is my first quick scratch try.

And here is a maze game...

Week 6 - Media

Week 6 in the DFI sandpit...

The media strikes back.

Image result for empire strike back
It was a cold day

But not that cold.

WWW

It seems as if we, as teachers, are all pretty snowed under at this time of year. If nothing else I found this comforting to know I was not alone in a compact curriculum. The consensus was the time focused on sites was well spent and classes are using and trying things out.

My note for working:

Another week of little class time.

Sites continue to be a good focus point for children to access their learning.
Using forms to pre-assess
Some great PTH comments on blogs
Buttons to access others blogs

My note for not making sense:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, quem sint fuisset duo no, vis erroribus expetendis ex, cu pro maiorum repudiare.

Connect

Kent Sommerville the DP from Pt England came to share with us today. He was a wealth of knowledge having been on the front lines of implementing 1-1 in the classroom.

BLOG

Gives children a real audience - it means they are not writing for the sake of it and can see a real purpose.

In the past when published it was stuck on the wall - who sees?

Living local - only knew what they knew -
Learn Globally - access to a huge audience and infinite possibilities.

Connections with other schools are growing as Manaiakalani spreads.

Being consistent:

Sharing language through school - Junior to senior - this way when the children move from classes or teachers they are already in the front door and it makes this transition smooth. Changes create barriers that children don’t need

Shared sense of language - same DNA - through the team

LCS - transfers through schooling - kids open to learning and growth. Ready for what higher education throws at them (and life)

LCS - don’t need to be rigid in order. May start with create

Face to face learning - brainstorm and conversations are important - sharing ideas
Staff and colleagues are your best assets

Community can see what is happening - become more engaged - empower to be involved
Community perceptions are black and white - this needs to be visible so they can see what is happening.

Sharing success

Youtube - Kent then shared some of his toys. Despite this label they showed amazing uses throughout the school. The drone footage was amazing and I am sure all communities and children would love to see this footage. This would be another engaging tool for children and their learning as well.

Here is the link to access a good starter for in class use: SPARK (Just mail to NBC attn Nick!)

We also looked at cameras and ways to use with computers. All very good...
but not a drone.

Oh and youtube playlist. This was a great way to focus children to access material you have seen...
but it's not a drone.

Google Draw

Create new - include instructions on side - the side of the drawing is a good place to move and save stuff without putting it on the page.
Change size of creation by dragging - making the page smaller is good for buttons. You can adjust by dragging or using the page setup cues.

Download as PNG - perfect for web.

From here I was able to create a few drawings for use in the classroom. I was also able to create several slides around teaching and learning. I feel the planning templates from examples (and Paige) will be very useful moving forward.

Check out my share. Feel free to access and comment on the blogsites.

Week 5: Enabling Access - Sites

Kia ora and welcome back to the musings of a lifelong learner...

WWW

Kahoot - remember gamification - Working well for other classes.

Teach - changing font and colour… simple ideas to build skills.

Senior Sports (site) page - use media group to report - Set up later in the session -
page now on site and shared with peers.

Toolbar/bookmark bar - lesson for staff. - Inserted in snippet dock - 1 minute idea and nice tidy tool.

Google form - group create.

Embed - codes in blogs.

Assigned myself follow ups.

VISIBLE

Important for learners to know what they are learning. IN the past the message has been hidden and
kept like a secret for mind reading students. Technology has made a big difference in this bring
intentions and next steps to accessible places and able to rewound and extended.
Hapara - makes learners work visible to teachers - we need to up skill our parents so
they can view and discuss what their children are learning.

Sites and Blogs are a good place to record teacher's inquiry. Evidence saved and able to be reviewed
easily.

Be careful with permissions and passwords. They can hinder the audience access to the work in drive.

SITES

(I have just learnt a valuable lesson on saving and publishing.)
SHOP window - engage the learner
Minimise the amount of clicks to access learning.

We were exposed to a wonderful range of teachers sites. These were rife with ideas and the examples
allowed us to use a critical eye and take the ideas to our own site.
Thanks to this and the time given to work on our sites I feel more confident with my site delivering to
my students.
Still room to improve and this will continue through the year - You can see the site in the following link.
