Computational Thinking

The excitement was building as we were set to focus on computational thinking.

The crew all seems to be putting their learning out to the world to the benefit of their students. The Belfast crew showing a wonderful level of time management providing us with resources and inspiration. (always with a smile)The work ons were short on supply and we were able to support as a group showing that spike in confidence.
While we were going Vivian was setting up at the back of the hall with tape providing an eager group of educators.
Empowered
Dorothy checked in to show us how the insertion of Manaiakalani had positively effected her community. It was interesting and relatable to some of the issues in our community. The use of empowered students rather than student agency rang true with me and I will be using this language with my parents. I am looking forward to taking some time to watch a recommended video taken from a recent TV show. Colleagues at school had mentioned it and I was disappointed to miss it.
Check it out while it is still on demand:
Trailblazers
We started by using a diagram and following an algorithm to find out who was the taller and who lives further away.
This had some practical uses at school and I look forward to using it.
This section of learning filled me with worry and awe about what is happening in the world. We met Sophia - AI robot with up to 80% of her functions not programmed but learnt.
One hour of code was a great tool and introduction for the children - I can see it working with following instructions - reading.
We then used scratch - very practical at school and easy to set up for beginning. I didn't personally like it but could see how children would enjoy and how it could be used educationally.

And here is a maze game...
Kia ora Nick,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your reflection, the more I work with Manaiakalani the more the word "empowerment" resonates with me. I find it especially useful when talking to caregivers about all the teaching we do in the Cybersmart curriculum so the students are empowered and not reliant on someone else to make smart decisions both online and in the real word.
I also think talking with the students about how we want to empower them and get them to drive their own learning is so important for their future steps especially if the move into the tertiary sector.
Nga mihi,
Mark
